Wood Fired Lava Brick Oven
I have the oven set up at my shop until I build our outdoor kitchen at home.
Most people make their wood fired ovens using fire brick. Fire brick is
expensive, especially when you ship it to Hawaii. Lava is free. I made a few
hundred lava bricks and built an oven that is made almost entirely from
local materials. The only imported materials are insulation, stainless steel
reinforcing fibers and 2 bags of refractory cement.

Bricks are mortared in place over a paper mache form. Dome bricks are
cut from Puna pahoehoe. Floor bricks are polished basalt from North
Kohala
A layer of stainless steel fiber reinforced refractory cement is placed over
the brick dome and entry.

Ceramic fiber insulation is rated to handle more than 2000 degrees.
A thin layer of mortar covers everything.

The best roast chicken I ever ate!
